On January 20th, the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), H.H Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed, declared 2023 as the “Year of Sustainability.”
This initiative, which aims to promote sustainable practices and reduce the country’s environmental impact, will focus on several key areas including renewable energy, water conservation, waste management, and sustainable mobility. The goal is to boost sustainability awareness and inspire other countries to follow.

Technology leaders can actively contribute to the “Year of Sustainability” by ensuring sustainability practices in their cloud environments and digital operations.
VMware’s Green Score
One company that has made sustainability a priority is VMware. As part of its efforts towards sustainability, VMware introduced a tool called the “Green Score” which can be used to measure sustainability in digital environments. The Green Score is a part of VMware’s multi-cloud management platform (VMware Aria). It comprises multiple parameters for effectively measuring and providing recommendations to improve the overall sustainability aspect of your environment.
The Green Score provides organizations with a set of KPIs that they can use to track where they are in their sustainability journey and how they are progressing over time. The score is based on five crucial aspects that contribute towards a green data center and makes certain calculated assumptions, based on deep research, with respect to the weightage of each. The overall objective is to improve efficiency and reduce carbon emissions resulting from IT infrastructure and operations.
The “Year of Sustainability” is a promising initiative that demonstrates the UAE’s leadership in sustainable development and its commitment to creating a more sustainable future for all. By taking responsibility for our digital footprint, we can pave the way for a more sustainable future for all.
